The legendary fountain of Magouliana is standing where generations after generations of people have cooled themselves off in the old-aged roots of the plane tree. We find it as Megali Vrysi in a Magoulianitian’s article in 1938. It is also known as “Kolopanas”.
The second name is owned to the women of Magouliana who used to go for washing clothes, textiles, bedspreads and household linen of their families, thanks to water running abundant there through. Each house resorted to smaller fountains in neighborhoods within the village for domestic use.
Throughout the years of our grandmothers, it served like the great “Popular Council” of the village women, the laundry place, the womanspace and the dating service. Laundering was done within its stone troughs. Three washtubs were useful for effective washing. One for the firsthand, another one for the secondhand washing with the assistance of indigo dye for properly bleaching the linen and a third one for the final rinse.
The stone troughs were initially lower placed but after the square was renovated they were placed higher up to make drinking of water more convenient.
